Some students of art carry the Gothic domination down to the middle of the 16th century, but before that the rivival of the classical had pushed Gothic into into the background in some sections, particularly in Italy. However, there is no question about the overpowering influence of Gothic in the 13th and 14th centuries. Its towers, reaching archers, magnificent windows, and its airnedd and loftiness certainly gave inspiration and exaltation to the spirit of medieval man and fixed Gothic as one of the pointed arch, with a long history perhaps going back through the Moors and Etruscans to the ancient Babylonians, that dominated Gothic style. From the standpoint of the church and art, the 13th century was so important that it can rightly be called The Great Century, for then many of the great Gothic cathedrals were built, which meant the rivival of monumental and decorative sculpture and the development of stained glass windows on such work to a major art. During this century the cathedrals at Chartres, Rheims, York, and Cologne were built. During the early Middle Ages the monks developed some artistic sentiment and did some good work in book designing, decorations, and some simple paintings, which led directly to a revival of painting."
