"My Life as a Cook"Being a cook during these days are crucial! My job isn't the easiest in the world. Some of us, including myself, get burnt all the time. I even taste the food my fellow cooks and I prepare for poison, just so the king wouldn't get sick. He's been the best king I've ever known and would go through those procedures just to keep my king safe, in return for him keeping me safe in his castle. Let me tell ya, the king has many friends. The banquets I prepare food for take long hours in the kitchen next to the blazing hearth.

Man is that thing hot! I have to prepare 6 courses of food! Imagine that..6 courses! That's enough to feed about 100 and more of his peers. All was welcome to these banquets. It's not only for the rich and famous. We also feed the less fortunate as a part of the king's fair and kind heart. The king even has a chaplain that would say grace before meals. Only rule was to know how to eat properly and have table manners

At occasions when I eat with the people I've cooked for, everyone seems to abide by these proper rules. Some people don't know how to pray or spoons and knives, but they try there hardest just to impress the king. On regular days, I prepare hunks of bread and a pot of ale. I add cheese to the preparation when it was available. There really isn't a variety to choose from. I serve what I can get my hands on. Sometimes exchanges from North Europe would stall with the cattle and sheep, and South Europe with the fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

At those times, there really is no choice but to serve the same thing over and over again. When meats, fishes, fruits, and vegetables get hard to get, they become only available to the ones with money. To save money and not waste money by letting these foods go bad, we preserve them. Meats and fishes were smoked or dried, while the fruits and vegetables were prickled. In the winter, meats were salted in huge wooden vats. On rare occasions when food does go bad, we often disguise them with spices to hide the rotten taste.

I know it's wrong, but if the cooks and myself didn't disguise these foods, we'd be bankrupt. The king wouldn't like that at all and make me on bad terms with the king. Cooking in the kitchen sometimes get hectic. With our cooking utensils being made out of wood and all, fellow cooks including myself get careless and leave it near the hearth. VAMOOSE! They're gone in flames. But we learn from our mistakes, now we have containers for our utensils to be organized. It can never hurt to be organized. As you can see, there are lots of duties that cooks, like myself, have to put themselves through.

As long as the king realizes and appreciates these things we do, it makes our jobs and lives a lot easier knowing somebody appreciates us.
